Five-year success rate of CeraRoot® Zirconia dental implants with three different rough surfaces

Following a comprehensive study, researchers reported that CeraRoot® zirconia dental implants with acid-etched roughened surfaces are the most effective CeraRoot® ceramic zirconia dental implants for tooth replacement. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the study evaluated the 5-year success rate of CeraRoot® ceramic zirconia dental implants having three different kinds of surfaces.

The study was conducted at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Scientists studied 831 consecutively-placed zirconia dental implants and analyzed the performance of the zirconia dental implants for five consecutive years. A total of 831 implants were placed in 378 dental patients having an average age of 48 years.

Researchers used one-piece zirconia dental implants by CeraRoot®. Each of the implants was designed and manufactured with three different roughened surfaces: acid-etched, coated, and uncoated. The study utilized five different implant designs.

For the implant placement procedure, flapless or standard surgical procedures were used. In cases of patients with insufficient bone width or height, simultaneous sinus elevation or bone augmentation was carried out.

Customized all-ceramic dental restorations were placed four months following the implant placement. When sinus elevation or bone augmentation was performed, the restorations were done after eight months or more.

Each instance of zirconia dental implant placement was followed up for five years. The long-range success rate after five years was 95% with the following break-up for each type of rough surface:

Acid-etched implants: 97.60%

Coated implants: 93.57%

Uncoated implants: 92.77%

In the group with the acid-etched surface, the success rate was significantly better compared to the other two groups. The mid-term investigative study established that zirconia dental implants that have roughened surface may be a useful option for tooth replacement. However, the researchers affirmed that further investigation was required to assess the long-term success rate of the roughened dental implant surfaces.
